Recast : Holly and Jessica.

Opening text for a PTA speech on arguing that children need to be taught to be careful beyond 'stranger danger'

Dear Parents/Guardians ,

I am extremely pleased to see a determined turn-out for today’s vital discussion on the Safety and Security of our Children. The children we, as much as you, are responsible for.

This has been particularly inspired by the Soham Murders on August 4th, May the young souls of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman rest in peace, and let us begin with a moment of silence to commemorate their memory …

Holly and Jessica were ordinary girls, like OUR ordinary students…OUR ordinary children. It could have been ANY one of them in the wrong place at the wrong time shambled into a vicious, heart-breaking murder. This is the reason why it is potent for us to educate our children and provide them with the resources they need in order to survive a world not trusted, the simple ‘stranger danger’ reminder fails to be enough.

How you may ask? Classic examples in the recent years have proved the potential of inevitable and unimaginable offenders. 10 year old boys snatch the toddler James Bulger and caused his brutal death as well as unmentionable recorded injuries, a couple sexually torture their own children and young girls, then bury their precious bodies under the pits of their houses. Unfortunately this is not all that occurs here, here in our home land.

Our staff have united and took out the time to create activities and ideas that will help our children, some ideas include self-defence classes, safe teachings for social networking, phones and socializing. The remainder will be discussed and explained in more detail by the head of our new ‘KidPower’ programme…Miss James. To complete and integrate this in our children’s lives we need your help, because together we can make a difference.

It is certain that we do not want our children to be the next Holly or James.

OUR children are THEIR victims.

Thank You.

Commentary:

The opening ‘Dear…’ is used as a convention to address the audience. The alliteration ‘Safety and Security’ emphasizes the importance of the children’s welfare and introduces the topicality. The use of the plural personal pronoun ‘our’ is used to signify how the speaker and staff prioritise and value their students as their own and gives the audience reassurance and comfort. The capital letters are used to show the stress of voice on the particular words expressing emotion and emphasis. The rhetorical question engages the audience and keeps them interested. The use of the present tense ‘occurs’ and ‘continue’ suggests to the audience that there still is an unsafe environment. The alliteration and repetition of ‘here’ and ‘home’ reinforces the insecurities of their surroundings which expresses the significant concern. The imperative ‘will’ provides hope and assurance to the parents that the school intends to make a difference. The plural second person pronoun ‘Your’ specifically engages and targets the audiences to make them feel like they are involved. The uses of the proper noun ‘Holly and James’ is used as a metaphor for unfortunate victims and compares them to the audiences children which has an emotional and personal effect. The repetition and the use of noun 'children' stresses the importance continuously given to them and the word signifies their innocence and young age. Furthermore final sentence is short and emotional to give a lasting effect.

'Justice At Night' Recast - Joe's Diary Entry

I haven't slept. How can one sleep? The funny thing is, i'm not even tired.
Every time my eyelids become heavy and gradually lower till there is not even a slit of white, the sound of the fire blazing and the disgusting chants repetitively echo through the walls of my head. How could we just stand there? The clenching of my fists seem like a newly discovered habit, I felt SO helpless. Why didn't i do something...anything...

The place was infested with motivated middle-aged men, their eyes inappropriately searching for their prey and their hearts filled with the dirt they usually work in. I raged with sincere anger, looking at their excited faces.
Then they brought him in...or should i say dragged. The tired twisted ropes wrapped around his young, half-naked body as if he was guilty. Everyone knew otherwise, but the crowds still roared with triumph.
He was then poached upon the roof, the last time he could feel a sense of security, a sense of stability...
At that point i could barely look, his body trembled like a scared puppy backed in a corner. He then shouted, with every bit of energy that remained, every last bit of hope...
"Boss, I didn't do nuthin, don't burn me boss"
At that point a shiver ran through the crowd in unison.
The car began to move as the noose tightened around his delicate neck, at that point a terrible, whimpering cry was heard. I quickly snapped my eyes shut.
The last thing i heard was the hissing of the fire sprawled upon his figure and the swinging of his angelic body.
A frustrated tear swam across my face, until the point i was dripping in my own tears.
How i wish i stayed in the useless car.
Joe.

Commentary:
The use of the short sentences, rhetorical questions and ellipsis in the opening paragraph is used to imitate the thinking process of Joe, this is appropriate for a confidential diary entry as they have a spontaneous and personal tone. These techniques also engage the audiences and give an insight to the readers of how she feels e.g. doubting herself. The personification 'infested' as well as words like 'roared' and 'prey' was used to create animal imagery in describing the locals at the lynching. The metaphor 'their hearts were filled with dirt...usually work in' is used to reinforce their insensitive and impure nature and also ...I used the alliteration 'tired' and 'twisted' to explain the ,

tired twisted - alliteration
snapped - onomatopeia
'angelic'
swam - personification
'dirt they usually worked in' - farm
'wrapped' - subjugated
repetition of . a sense of stability, a sense of security
delicate , young

Examples of Female representations that follow the conventions of Horror Movies...

1. House Of Wax - Paris Hilton

House Of Wax
Paige Edward is played by Paris Hilton and is the first girl to be killed...is this because of her provocative dress sense and 'impure' nature...?

2. Jennifers Body...Megan Fox had got possessed as she was eligible because of her virginal innocence...a group of boys had to sacrifice a virgin to create a monster in order for their fame to rise..

Script for 'Why i want a wife' Radio Adaptation

Scene 1:
Danielle and Rob go out during their lunch break

EXT. LOCAL CAFE. DAY

DANIELLE TAKES A SIP OF HER COFFEE
Danielle: I want a husband!
ROB SNIGGERS
Rob: Haha, Why?
Danielle: So he can take me out for lunch, grab the best table in the room, order the food as he knows what i like to eat, remember dessert and then pay for it all, including a generous tip.
ROB ROLLS HIS EYES
Rob: Is that all?
Danielle: I want a husband who can give me his coat for when I'm cold, warm me up with a cup of hot chocolate and light a fire just in case.
Rob: How about buying a warmer jacket?
DANIELLE IGNORES
Danielle: I want a husband to save me from all the creepy crawlies visiting my room, pick them up without killing them, take it outside to a new home and then wash his hands before touching anything.
Rob: Ever heard of insect repellents?
Danielle: No. I want a husband who can open all the tough jar lids for me, change the bulbs, fix the blockage in the sink, then assemble the new furniture.
Rob: Erm okay...
Danielle: And a husband who can leave me alone most of the day, whilst he works hard to pay the bills, and arrives not tired but happy, helpful and complimentary.
Rob: I think we should get back to work...
ROB RISES
Danielle: I want a husband who is an eternal romantic.
Rob: OKAY! I hate to break it to you Danni but ... your MARRIED!
Danielle: Oh, I almost forgot. (SIGH)

Commentary: I used the repetition of 'I want a husband' to imitate the original article but add an opposing narrative. The use of asyndetic list also reflects on the techniques that Syfer uses to emphasize things expected of a partner. The stage directions are used to help the audience imagine the situation and also help understand how the characters are feeling, for example ‘ROB RISES’ is used to explain how he has lost interest and is feeling uncomfortable hence why he quickly rushes to get going back to work. The capital letters on ‘MARRIED’ is used to strengthen the tone of the word and illustrate his voice getting louder. The italics on ‘Almost’ is used to show the stress on the word to help the audience hear her sense of disappointment in her tone of voice. Sound effects, voiceover, narration and dialogue are all common techniques used in radio plays to help the audience get a better understanding of the situation and make the audience engage as they feel as if they are actually watching it or included in the play.

How Satire is used in 'Why I Want a Wife'

1. What is Satire?

Satire is a technique used to intentionally expose vice and folly (or any subject), commonly through sarcasm, ridicule, irony, mockery and hyperbole.

2. How is satire used in the text?

It is used to expose stereotyped housewives in order to poke fun out of what some men expect of their wives and to imply how ridiculous the chores really are.

"I want a wife who will keep my clothes clean, ironed, mended, replaced when need be, and who will see to it that my personal best things are kept in their place"

In this quote she uses an asyndetic list to emphasize various chores expected of a wife, the list stresses on the quantity of workload expected of a wife solely for clothing. This makes the audience think and compare the amount of work to a job of a maids which suggests how their workload is stupendous and how housewives work for no pay or reward, hence treated unfairly.

3. Why is it used and to what effect?

It is used effectively as a technique to ridicule a mans unequal and disrespectful perspective of a wife. She uses hyperbole to exaggerate chores which identifies the sarcasm in her tone. It is also used to emphasize how hard and unfairly they work and therefore how they are taken for granted, this suggests how their partners should be more appreciative.

Exam Question on 'The BITCH manifesto'

Boss. Not bitch. BOSS!

Why is it that just because i control their asses they call me a bitch? Simple. Boy's cannot handle being dominated by a female. They dislike being told what to do by a person who wears a bra instead of briefs. But too bad, this is the real world and the sooner they come to realise it the better. After working here for our family Newspaper for several years, my late father, a realman, had promoted me as the Manager of the Editorial department. I deserved it, worked hard for it.

Intelligent, successful, powerful, ambitious, strong-minded, independent BUT a bitch.

The tight murmurs and whispers didn't always bounce of my back. Their poison used to bite at me with viscous intentions, especially when it came from the girls. They were the worst, bitchiness coming from bitch’s mouths. But it is their poison that travelled trough me and made me how i am today. A real Bitch.

Demanding, resentful, hard-headed and at times bitter. Just how i like my tea. The tea i like them to make for me.

It is different with him though, he understands me. He knows the real me, the nice me, the true me. He loves me. So coming home to another real man is what gets me through my day. Life is sweet with him, hes my boss. Just the way i like it.

Interview

Interview

Here i have Karina Tatula whose courageous nature and determination has lead to a gradual change in Lala-istan.

J: Good Morning, what do you believe is the reason for this initial segregation between the rights of the sexes?
S: Well i think it depends on the country, for example in theocratic societies, some have misconstrued and highlighted what they want from their faith and beliefs and embedded this dominance for men upon its society. This becomes an ongoing cycle as the men therefore have these superior positions disabling an opportunity to learn the truth and earn female rights.

J: There are still many countries like these in the world today, what do you think should help resolve this issue?
S: I think women need to educate themselves. Education is potent to every individual. If they understand the society and learn their rights they will be able to identify the problems and not feel intimidated by the superiors and be able to produce a strong argument.

J: What if what they say is not heard?
S: That is when you need to take it a step further, educate to more females and protest for your rights. Whatever method it is, the sacrifice is necessary for the future of women. Wouldn't you sacrifice anything for your children? We have to think about the future.

J: Ofcourse, like any mother would. What about the women who stay silent? Why do you think this is?
S: Fear. They are simply fearful to becoming a victim. Or they are so comfortable with the way things are that they simply do not notice that there is a problem.

J: Okay, unfortunately we have to wrap up now, thank you so much for coming here today.

Further information on Karina will be available on the website.
